The 3rd annual, University Heights Arts Open (UHAO) is a free self guided tour of the arts. The weekend event showcases the works of new as well as celebrated artists, playwrights, performers and musicians from the San Diego region enlivening the University Heights community. The event spans a 2 mile radius incorporating businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a shuttle tour of over twenty artist studios in the area.

The event is presented by the non profit organization, University Heights Art Association in partnership with the Birney Academy of International Studies, the University Heights Community Development Corporation, the University Heights Community Association, Boulevard Business Improvement Association, and the Swedenborgian Church of San Diego.  The UHAO is committed to broadening its artistic and cultural offerings to provide a diverse and exciting physical environment, enhance the quality of life, encourage dialogue and learning, and influence the area’s economic growth.

A primary objective of the UHAO is to provide an affordable event for artists to showcase their works as well as offering a wide range of artistic expression, varied talent and cultural context for visitors.

A complimentary color brochure of the UHAO exhibits —including photos of artwork, some artists’ biographies and a walking/trolley tour map will be produced and available to visitors.  The map will include a schedule listing times and locations of the performances and readings by the diverse collection of musicians, performers and writers.   Birney Academy of International Studies will host an exhibition of their student’s artworks created as a result of the UHAA workshops and will feature chalk art and children’s activities. The joint use field at Park Blvd and Meade will house San Diego artists that do not live in University Heights. Free shuttle service will assist the visitors on their tour throughout the day.

Maps will also be available online at www.uharts.org.

ART ROCKS!

In celebration of the Arts and University Heights 120th anniversary,  artists will turn large river rocks (which are the neighborhoods signature building element) into works of art to be displayed at the 3rd annual UH ARTS OPEN.  The smooth river stones make a fitting natural canvas and medium for the creativity and variety of artists.

The ART ROCKS! art pieces will make their first public appearance on the August 15th  preview party at Swedenborg Hall along with other representative pieces of participating artists.   Artists can keep their rocks when the Preview party ends in order to be included in their body of work on display at their Open Studios.   The ART ROCKS! project is intended as a fund raiser for University Heights 2008 UH Arts OPEN,  and so UHAA will cheerfully accept any free-will donation from contributing artists.

Artists wishing to participate in transforming a river rock into a (new) work of art should submit images or ideas to artrocks@uharts.org by June 15th.  Once selected, the 20 artists will be contacted by June 30th.
